On Monday, May 14, the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University, the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth, and the George W. Bush Presidential Center will host a debate on the future of America’s global role at the George W. Bush Institute. This debate, convened by the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy program and the Charles Koch Institute, in partnership with POLITICO, is the fourth in a series of thematic debates on America’s role in the world.

Hosted in cities around the United States, this series seeks to foster a vigorous, civil and constructive national discussion on the future of American foreign policy. The Dallas debate will address the nature of American interests in a globalized world, the role of values in U.S. foreign policy, and how the United States should focus its diplomatic military, and economic engagement in the 21st century.

Holly Kuzmich, executive director of the George W. Bush Institute and senior vice president at the George W. Bush Presidential Center, will provide opening remarks. Gregory Hellman, defense reporter with POLITICO and author of Morning Defense, will moderate the debate, which will include: Loren DeJonge Schulman, deputy director of studies, Center for a New American Security; Ted Piccone, senior fellow, Foreign Policy at Brookings; Anna Simons, professor of defense analysis, Naval Postgraduate School. Jeff Engel, director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University, will moderate a question-and-answer segment based on questions submitted by the audience and on social media.
