Enemy of the people: A book discussion with Marvin Kalb and Dan Rather

    When: Wednesday, October 17, 2018, 3:00 — 4:15 p.m.

Where: The Brookings Institution, Falk Auditorium, 1775 Massachusetts Ave, NW, Washington, DC

    What:

The American press has long been an institution seeking to uphold the integrity of our democracy. Past presidential administrations may have criticized the media at times, but the Trump administration has elevated such attacks to unprecedented levels, declaring the press as being an “enemy of the American people.” As President Trump fuels the “fake news” fire and a general distrust of journalists, the power of the press is weakening in some segments of society. In his new book, “Enemy of the People”, award-winning journalist and Brookings Nonresident Senior Fellow Marvin Kalb warns that this trend poses serious threats to the health of our democracy.

On October 17, Kalb will debut his book at Brookings and will be joined by veteran journalist Dan Rather for a discussion about its main themes. The two journalists will explore how Trump has delegitimized the American press and why we should fear for the future of American democracy.

After the session, speakers will take audience questions. You can also follow the conversation on Twitter using #FreePress.

Copies of "Enemy of the People" will be on sale at a 20% discount for event attendees.
