On March 22, Brookings hosted a gala dinner at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing, China, to celebrate the Brookings centenary
and the tenth anniversaries of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center (BTC) and the John L. Thornton China Center (JLTCC). The event included remarks and reflections by John L. Thornton and Tsinghua University President Qiu Yong, co-chairs of the Brookings China Council; JLTCC Director Cheng Li and BTC Director Qi Ye; and former JLTCC Directors Jeffrey A. Bader and Kenneth G. Lieberthal. The gala’s guest of honor, China State Councilor Yang Jiechi, delivered keynote remarks on the importance of the U.S.-China relationship and recalled his first visit to Brookings in the 1980s. Brookings Executive Vice President Martin Indyk concluded the gala by toasting a new decade—and a new century—of Brookings’s research and collaboration with Tsinghua University and Chinese think tanks.
