Watch: Policing, public safety, and mental health

Individuals who suffer from mental illness are more likely to be injured or killed during police encounters. The problem is exacerbated by significant racial disparities. To help address this, New Jersey launched ARRIVE Together—a program which pairs mental health professionals with police for calls involving people suffering from mental health distress.

Has the program been effective so far? At a Brookings event, Senior Fellow Rashawn Ray presented findings from his research. Ray was joined by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and a panel of law enforcement and mental health professionals who have used the pilot program.

Quote of the month

“ARRIVE Together has the potential to improve police-community relations, change law enforcement culture, and provide substantive assistance to people suffering from mental health symptoms.”
