The Department of Defense released the 2022 National Defense Strategy (NDS) on October 27. The document details the Biden administration’s defense priorities and how it will advance them through integrated deterrence, campaigning, and key technology investments. Consistent with the 2022 National Security Strategy, the NDS identifies the People’s Republic of China as the U.S.’s main strategic competitor and pacing challenge, and Russia as an acute threat. It outlines how the U.S. will continue to address heightened risks posed by North Korea, Iran, violent extremist organizations, and emerging challenges such as climate change.

On November 4, join the Strobe Talbott Center for Security, Strategy, and Technology at Brookings for a conversation featuring Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl to reflect on the NDS and address critical elements of the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review and the 2022 Missile Defense Review. The conversation will be followed by a panel of Brookings experts that will consider how the newly released documents position the U.S. to meet the defining challenges of this “decisive decade.”
