Deterrence in the Pacific: A conversation with Admiral Paparo

Monday, November 16, 2026, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Location: The Brookings Institution, Falk Auditorium, 1775 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20036

The Pacific is central to U.S. national security and global prosperity. Intensifying U.S.-China strategic competition and the importance of regional trade routes have made the Pacific the Trump administration’s top priority for military deterrence. Preventing conflict in the region requires maintaining stability across the Taiwan Strait and fulfilling alliance burden-sharing commitments. It also requires investing in technological innovation and joint warfighting, including operationalizing asymmetric capabilities and improving readiness initiatives.

On November 16, the Strobe Talbott Center for Security, Strategy, and Technology at Brookings will host Commander of U.S. Pacific Command Admiral Samuel Paparo for a conversation on Pacific security and the strategic priorities guiding U.S. policy in the region. Light refreshments will be available for in-person attendees.
