The U.S. is aging—and not ready for it.

The number of Americans age 65 or older is projected to grow from 65.6 million to 77.5 million in the next decade. As the number of older Americans grows, so too will the need for long-term care. Meeting those needs will require growing the long-term care workforce, improving access to long-term care, and addressing the uneven quality of long-term care services and supports.

On September 29, The Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution will host an event to discuss policies to expand access to long-term care. The event will feature two panel discussions. Panelists include Aviva Aron-Dine (Brookings Institution), Jonathan Cohn (The Bulwark), Maggie Elehwany (Argentum), Nicole Howell (National Council on Aging), Carole Johnson (University Hospital), Neale Mahoney (Stanford University), Tisamarie Sherry (Urban Institute), Tara Watson (Brookings Institution), and Haeyoung Yoon (National Domestic Workers Alliance).

In conjunction with the event, The Hamilton Project will release new publications including a proposal for a new visa for direct care workers; an assessment of Medicare’s home health benefit; and an analysis exploring the nursing home and home care workforce.
