The election of Donald Trump and Republican control of both the House and Senate have brought significant changes in financial regulation and consumer protection. The House and Senate have passed separate bills creating a regulatory regime for stablecoins. The administration has sought to reduce the budget and staffing of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The Federal Reserve is contemplating changes to bank capital requirements. And there is increasing focus on the shortage of affordable housing. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) has been a major player in legislative debates on all these issues.
On July 24 at the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at Brookings, Rep. Waters will share her views on recent developments. Following her remarks, she will be interviewed by Brookings’ Nellie Liang, former under secretary of the Treasury for domestic finance, and take questions from the audience.
Rep. Waters has represented her Southern California congressional district since 1991 after serving seven terms in the California State Assembly. Waters chaired the House Financial Services Committee from 2019 to 2023, and since then, has been the ranking member.
