Universal high-speed broadband access is fundamental to connectivity for individuals, businesses, community institutions, and government. Currently, all 56 states and territories have received funding to advance infrastructure through the federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program, but connecting everyone comes with some challenges.
The current administration challenged the Digital Equity Act, the Federal Communications Commission is reviewing a program which for years has provided access to schools and libraries, and another federal provision, the Universal Service Fund, is facing renewed scrutiny over agency overreach.
But for the digital economy to be of benefit for all, it is imperative that access remains affordable and resilient, especially as AI and the need for fiber networks and spectrum grow.
On November 18, the Center for Technology Innovation (CTI) at Brookings will host a conversation to discuss the state of broadband, what's next for these programs, and what more needs to be done, especially in regard to affordability and the diffusion of AI.
This event will be open to attend in person or watch online. Online viewers can submit questions via e-mail to events@brookings.edu.
