President Joe Biden will host the leaders of Japan and the Republic of Korea for a trilateral summit at Camp David on August 18, 2023. The summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will focus on deepening trilateral cooperation on shared regional and global challenges such as the growing threat posed by North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs, and strengthening ties with other regional stakeholders such as ASEAN and the Pacific Island states.
On August 16, the Foreign Policy program at Brookings will host White House Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell, U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel, and U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Philip Goldberg in a moderated discussion led by Brookings scholars Patricia Kim and Andrew Yeo to preview the upcoming summit and analyze the challenges and opportunities for U.S.-Japan-ROK trilateral coordination. Audience Q&A will follow the discussion.
