The future of American air power

    When: Monday, May 2, 2022, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. EDT

    Where: https://www.brookings.edu/events/the-future-of-american-air-power

What: China’s growing military power and Russia’s nuclear saber-rattling amidst its war in Ukraine shine a spotlight on the importance of American air power and its role in the nation’s defense. Now housing two separate services — the Air Force and the Space Force — the Department of the Air Force’s proposed budget for FY2023 would grow to $194 billion, an increase of 7% from $182 billion in FY2022, of which $169.5 billion would go to the Air Force. While the Air Force is aiming to cut numerous aircraft, it also seeks to provide more funding for other capabilities, including hypersonics and a replacement to the aging Airborne Warning and Control System. At stake are also long-term trends in air power, including unmanned systems.

On May 2, Brookings will host an event to discuss the future of American air power, and the Department of the Air Force’s role in deterring potential aggressors.
