What: Since becoming the 20th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2019, General Mark Milley has worked to realize the National Defense Strategy, which prioritizes competition with China and Russia in U.S. defense planning. Gen. Milley has worked closely with civilian and uniformed leadership toward remaking the U.S. armed forces into a modern force capable of deterring and heading off great power threats. He has simultaneously had to keep a close eye on perennial defense challenges such as Iran, North Korea, and violent extremism in the Middle East and elsewhere. Gen. Milley's tenure has coincided with a unique period in American military history, wherein questions about preserving the apolitical character of the armed forces have been paramount. Likewise, the Defense Department is facing pressing questions about how to achieve its modernization goals in a challenging post-pandemic fiscal environment.
On December 2, Foreign Policy at Brookings will host General Milley for a conversation about his tenure as chairman and his priorities and goals. Questions from the audience will follow the discussion.
