The defense industrial base and the future of warfare

    When: Friday, October 23, 2020, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. EDT

What: The defense industrial base is facing numerous challenges, from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on the nation’s fiscal outlook to the increasingly sophisticated innovative potential of America’s adversaries. While the United States grapples with the immediate lessons of the pandemic, such as the need to secure its supply chains, it must also look beyond the immediate crisis to ensure the nation’s readiness for future warfare. That readiness requires a wide array of capabilities, but vertical air lift, which used to refer only to helicopters and now includes tilt-rotor technology, could play a key role in future conflict scenarios.

On October 23, Foreign Policy at Brookings will host an event exploring the future of the defense industrial base and challenges facing policymakers and the industry. Senior Fellow Michael O’Hanlon will engage Mitch Snyder, CEO of Bell, and Rep. Anthony Brown, vice chair of the House Armed Services Committee, on these and other topics. Questions from the audience will follow the discussion.
