Addressing climate change in US defense strategy and budget

    When: Thursday, May 19, 2022, 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. EDT

    Where: https://www.brookings.edu/events/addressing-climate-change-in-us-defense-strategy-and-budget

What: Climate change is reshaping geostrategic, operational, and tactical environments with significant implications for U.S. national security and defense. The secretary of defense has called climate change an “existential threat”, and the ways in which the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) responds to this threat will shape perceptions of America’s global leadership and our ability to project influence for decades to come. How does DOD’s mission align with addressing the climate crisis? How is this alignment reflected in core DOD strategy documents and the defense budget? How can we work with our allies and partners around climate adaptation and mitigation efforts? How can DOD tackle consequential impacts of climate change that are difficult to assess systematically? And, ultimately, how will all of this help the United States maintain our competitive advantage in the current and future warfighting environment?

On May 19, the Foreign Policy program at Brookings will host a webinar to explore how the Department of Defense is responding to the challenges of climate change and how this is reflected in the FY23 budget request to Congress, in the National Defense Strategy, and in engagements with allies and partners.
