In this year of elections, where an anticipated four billion people will cast their vote, foreign election interference continues to be a major threat to democracy around the world. This threat has only gotten more sophisticated, with generative AI boosting the quality and pace of the spread of misinformation and disinformation, both domestically and from abroad. In this troubling period, what are the best paths forward? In which areas have there been successes and failures? What lessons can be drawn from recent elections around the world, including in Taiwan, which held one of the first elections in 2024? How can international partners work together against this global threat?

On April 11, the Center for Asia Policy Studies in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings will host Valerie Wirchshafter, Mareike Ohlberg, Yang Kuang-shun, and John Lee for a virtual panel discussion moderated by  Ryan Hass. The discussion will examine the current state of play of AI technology and the lessons learned from the experiences in Europe, Taiwan, and Australia on foreign election interference.
