The Biden presidency and the future of America’s forever wars

    When: Tuesday, November 24, 2020, 1:00 - 2:15 p.m. EST

    Online only: https://www.brookings.edu/events/the-biden-presidency-and-the-future-of-americas-forever-wars

What: On November 17, outgoing President Trump announced his intention to withdraw all but 2,500 troops from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Opponents of the move believe it will destabilize these countries, while others support withdrawing troops but believe it does not go far enough to end these wars.

No matter what happens in the waning days of the Trump presidency, the Biden administration will face many difficult questions concerning the future of America’s “forever wars.” Uncertainty over intra-Afghan peace talks, as well as America’s appetite for sustained military commitments, highlights an urgent set of decision points that await President-elect Biden and his administration.

On November 24, in partnership with the Charles Koch Institute, Foreign Policy at Brookings will host a discussion with foreign policy scholars on the future of U.S. foreign policy, war in the broader Middle East, and other issues facing the new administration. Following their discussion, the panel will take questions from the audience.
