Regulating digital industries

Brookings Senior Fellow Mark MacCarthy’s new publication, “Regulating Digital Industries: How Public Oversight Can Encourage Competition, Protect Privacy, and Ensure Free Speech” is the first book to address the tech backlash within a coherent policy framework. Deeply informed by the history of regulation and antitrust in the United States, it brings insights from past antitrust cases, broadcasting and financial services regulation to enrich the discussion of remedies to the failure of tech competition, the invasion of privacy by digital firms and the information disorder perpetuated by social media platforms.

On November 14, join the Center for Technology Innovation (CTI) at the Brookings Institution for a fireside chat with CTI Director Nicol Turner Lee and Mark MacCarthy on his new book. Following the chat, Nicol will moderate a discussion with MacCarthy, Jon Leibowitz, former chair of the FTC, Chris Lewis, president and CEO at Public Knowledge, and Harleen Gambhir, counsel to Senator Elizabeth Warren on the regulation of digital industries and the role of government in promoting competition, protecting privacy, and preserving free speech.

Viewers can submit questions for speakers via email to events@brookings.edu or via Twitter @BrookingsGov using #DigitalRegulation.
