After decades of growing economic divergence, the American Rescue Plan Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act represent a federal recommitment to investing directly in local communities to power national prosperity, competitiveness, and resilience. How can federal, state, and local leaders implement these place-based investments to catalyze new markets, support new technologies, and improve economic and social outcomes in parts of the country left behind by recent waves of growth? On May 21, the Brookings Institution and Duke University will host an event focused on this renewed place-based economic agenda, featuring high-level Biden administration officials, state and local leaders, and national experts.
