What: How can policymakers make Americans more economically secure? In a new book, “The Wolf at the Door: The Menace of Economic Insecurity and How to Fight It,” Michael Graetz and Ian Shapiro argue that the solution is neither protectionism nor class warfare but rather a return to the hard work of building coalitions around realistic goals and pursuing these goals doggedly through the political system.
On October 1, Brookings will host Michael Graetz to discuss these ideas and the recommendations that he and Shapiro develop for increasing jobs, boosting wages, strengthening unemployment protections, and raising access to high-quality and affordable health care and child care. A distinguished panel of discussants will then respond to these ideas.
